Why do we add possum fur to our products?

Research shows that it’s 55% warmer than Merino and 35% warmer than cashmere.

It will not irritate the skin and make the item super soft.

Possum fur has a unique hollow structure that traps air, providing exceptional insulation properties. It also has no scales, making it silky and soft to the touch.

The New Zealand brushtail possum is an introduced species brought to NZ from Australia in 1837. With no natural predators, they have become New Zealand’s most damaging animal pest, wreaking havoc on native forests and wildlife, including the iconic kiwi.

The use of possum fur in Koru knitwear helps to preserve New Zealand’s unique and beautiful environment.

Merino lambswool is better than just standard Merino wool

Merino lambswool wool is finer than normal Merino wool, also Merino wool garments are typically lighter in weight than standard wool. 

Merino Lambswool may feel a bit warmer than standard Merino wool since it has a higher micron count.

Mulberry Silk:

Mulberry silk is produced by the bombyx mori, a domesticated silkworm whose diet consists exclusively of leaves from the mulberry tree. The mulberry silkworm spins a cocoon, which is unravelled into a single long mulberry silk fibre - several fibres are then spun into mulberry silk thread which is then woven into silk fabric used to make silk bedding, accessories, and clothing.

The mulberry leaf is a nutrient-rich, sustainable food source for the bombyx Mori moth. Silkworms who feed exclusively on mulberry leaves produce cocoons of fine, strong, and uniform colour fibres. How To Care For Your Luxury Merino Possum Silk Clothing:

The best part is that they don’t hold onto odors as synthetic fabrics do.

So, they do not need to be washed as regularly and can simply be aired out between uses. However, most of us appreciate clean clothing and after wearing a wool garment several times or if it becomes stained or soiled, you will want to wash it thoroughly.

With both Merino and possum fur, the best method for cleaning either fabric type is hand washing. This will help protect the fabric and help your garment to last for as long as possible.

To hand wash possum fur and Merino wool items, fill a clean sink or basin with warm water. Add a gentle, wool-approved detergent to the water and gently stir to mix it in. Place your wool garment in and use your hand to gently agitate it. Allow the garment to soak for about 10 minutes.

Then, remove the garment from the basin, drain the water, and rinse any excess soap out of the basin. Fill the basin with fresh warm water and place the wool garment back in. Gently squeeze the garment to release the soap. Continue repeating these steps until all the soap has been removed from the wool and the water is clear.

The safest way to dry wool is to air dry it. After rinsing the soap out of the garment, lay it flat to dry on a clean towel. Hang drying is not advised, as it could cause the fabric to stretch out. You should also avoid placing wool items near direct sunlight or heat as it could make them shrink or cause other damage.

Once dry, fold your luxury items and store them in a drawer. Even when dry, wool can still stretch out if hung. Protecting wool from moths is also essential. Using moth traps will help eliminate a moth problem and cedar chips, or lavender sachets will deter moths from ruining your wool items. If you are not planning on wearing a wool garment in the near future, store it in an airtight plastic bin or archival box to keep it more protected.
